BioMost houses in the town where I grew up used to have well water, but they don’t anymore. According to people who lived there at the time, the reason they had to stop using it was because the groundwater got polluted in the 1970s by an industrial accident at a huge golf ball factory that was around a mile from my parents’ house. I never found out for sure what sort of accident it was, but when my parents remodeled their lawn in 1996 they encountered at least a dozen decades-old golf balls buried several inches below the ground, and embedded in the trunks of trees.
